Problem Solving in Year 6

22 January 2025 By bethcarabine

Every week, Year Six have a problem solving lesson where they work together in groups to tackle tricky maths problems. This week, our new theme was trial and improvement so we realised very quickly that the only way to approach this unit was to try and improve every time, therefore we needed to be resilient when we didn’t get the correct answer first time around. Working together, we thought about what we know from the question, what we don’t know and what the question is asking us to do and highlighted this in different colours to represent this. After this, we identified that in order to answer this question, we would need to remember what square numbers were and how to identify them. We did this together as a class so that we could use this information when trying different options. Finally, we worked as a group to consider different possibilities and by the end of the lesson, we created a circle using all of the numbers in the blue box. The excitement throughout our classrooms was amazing when we found solutions!

Well done Year 6, we are very proud of how resilient you were.

Year 6 Historians Visit Discovery Museum

19 November 2024 By bethcarabine

On Monday, Year 6 became immersed in all things history as they ventured to Newcastle to visit the Discovery Museum to undertake a workshop about WW1 and WW2. They were able to explore artefacts from the time and think about how people lived during this era of history. They then took part in a rationing activity where they had to think about how preparing meals for a family for a week with limited resources. They enjoyed using rationing books to purchase different resources and it really made them think about how limited food resources were during this time.

After this, they enjoyed exploring the rest of the museum and their favourite exhibit was definitely the Science Lab where they were able to explore light which is their new topic. a fun day was had by all and it certainly opened our mind to how life was during the wars.

Y6 Dodgeball

23 October 2024 By atumelty

The Year 6 pupils represented St Aloysius in the South Tyneside Dodgeball Competition this afternoon. After a great start in their league, they finished 2nd and qualified for the semi-finals. However, after a tightly fought semi-final and a sudden death ending the children were knocked out of the competition. They should all be very proud of themselves for both their performances but also their positive attitudes and excellent manners throughout the afternoon. Well done
